Back in the fall of 2020, we received an opportunity to build a Fellowship Hall for St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Canyon Lake. The small parish sits just below the dam and I remember driving up the hill of the driveway to the church, surrounded by dense oaks trees. I will never forget that interview. Rather than sitting in a stuffy room, trying to convince the building committee and the architect that we were the best contractor for the job, our Superintendent recommended we walk outside to the proposed construction site. Standing under the shade of those big oak trees, we discussed their hopes and dreams for the new building; the must-haves and the nice-to-haves. We covered topics ranging from budget and schedule to subcontractor selections and materials suppliers. At the end of the interview we thanked them for their time and got in our trucks to drive back to town. Before we had even turned onto highway 46, the church called and told us the job was ours.

That project would not start construction until February of 2023. For three years we worked with the design team and the building committee as we fought inflation, code changes, and fundraising challenges. It was a long road and at times it felt like it wouldn’t happen. But we never lost hope, while our pre-construction team managed the design process we created fliers, campaign signs, and attended mass to help with fundraising. Now that project has been complete for about a year and the new building has hosted potlucks, weddings, and Sunday school classes. It is a vibrant space where the parishioners can gather, celebrate, and foster their sense of community. That project is a testament to the down to-earth nature of the parishioners and the heart of our team.

I am certain that your project means as much to you as the Fellowship Hall meant for them. No doubt you will face challenges and setbacks along the way.
